Students of Classics acquire an unusually wide range of intellectual qualities and gain skills that will serve them well in almost any career. Classicists served as code-breakers in World War II, and are still highly sought after in fields that require systematic mental rigor. Yet Classics ... is a humanistic discipline, engaging students with diverse responses to the human condition, expressed through literature and art ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. In studying these works students develop sophisticated abilities to make connections, to deal with ambiguity and multiple meanings, and to appreciate the richness of ways people can communicate, even across a distance of thousands of years.

Classics majors go on to further studies and careers in law, medicine, and business or to graduate study in Classics itself. Classics remains an excellent basis for graduate study in any of the related fields which form the liberal arts curriculum. The study of Latin or Greek (or both) offers a firm foundation for the subsequent study of English or the Romance languages. The vast scope of Classics is therefore defined by the chronological and geographical boundaries of those two early civilzations but it includes, or overlaps with, many disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences. This means that a wide variety of subjects and methods of investigation come within the experience of students who pursue the study of the Classical world.
