At ECU, Classical Studies is an interdisciplinary program within the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, with its principal language faculty and Director in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Students may minor in Classical Studies, or use the BA / BS in Multidisciplinary Studies to major in Classics or Classical Civilization. The program offers four years of Latin and classical Greek, and more than twenty courses on classical archeology, art history, history, literature, philosophy and religion.

All foreign language study includes learning about the people who speak the language, so Classical Studies is the natural companion to Latin. In Classical Studies, students study Greek mythology and Greek and Roman history and literature every year, gradually deepening their knowledge and understanding. This long grounding prepares students to read the classics of Greek, Roman, and English literature, and to study and understand the modern world.

Classical Studies has a strongly international character, and for this reason materials have to be acquired from widely diverse sources. Approval plans, standing orders, and faculty requests account for many new additions to the collection. The Library makes every effort to acquire appropriate books and journals wherever they are published.

Philosophy, Religion and Classical Studies each has its separate courses and majors or minors at Susquehanna. But in a way not found elsewhere, they all focus upon what is essential to being fully human. They all have practical application in any occupation or profession where one deals with real issues of life. And all three, in their own way, focus upon good argument, tolerance, an appreciation for vital pasts, and the freeing of the human spirit.

Classical Studies ultimately touches upon almost every field of human inquiry. Indeed, the Western cultural tradition begins with the achievements of the ancient Greeks and Romans in a wide range of fields including politics, literature, art, and philosophy. The Program in Classical Studies draws on the faculty of various departments in the College of Liberal Arts and acknowledges the importance of approaching the civilizations of the ancient Mediterranean world from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.

Classical Studies introduces the student to the Greek and Roman World, its literature, history, religion and government. Greco-Roman civilization was the wellspring of western culture and the direct antecedent of much of what is central and familiar in contemporary Canadian society. Its achievements in many fields still set the standards by which modern endeavours are judged. In most courses the original ancient Greek and Latin texts come alive in English translation.
