Class-action lawyers are often lauded by consumer groups but demonized by targeted companies. Congress has largely failed in efforts to curb Milberg Weiss' dominance by passing litigation reforms. The firm and its allies have portrayed the indictment itself as politically motivated.

Like Model Rule 1.1, the Rule commences at the time a lawyer undertakes to represent an individual or group of individuals with a matter that the lawyer reasonably believes could lead to class action representation. Section (B) of the Rule imposes a number of limitations on a lawyer=s ability to represent a class. These limitations generally relate to the lawyer=s competency, conflicts of interests, and merits of the class action.

One class-action complaint against Verizon and BellSouth was brought by Rhode Island lawyers Michael St. Pierre and Amato A. DeLuca. Lawyer Peter Wasylyk filed separate class-action complaints later in the day against Verizon and AT&T.

If you join a class action suit, you share the financial award with all the other members, and your share could be like 5-10 dollars. Of course, you have no fees, and you are still giving the company hell, but without the 2-3 thousand dollars of your own expenses going to your lawyer.
