Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina returns a forehand Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina returns a forehand to Kim Clijsters of Belgium during their match at the French Open tennis championships at Roland Garros stadium in Paris on Friday. Fernandez won the match 6-4 6-0.
Fernandez had only started to play tennis seriously at the age of 15, but has already taken great strides. She says she prefers grass, and grew up admiring the games of Pete Sampras and fellow left-hander Martina Navratilova, which explains her goal of winning Wimbledon one day. As unlikely as it still seems, the French, quite astonishingly, could come first.

De los Rios, from Paraguay, had little trouble defeating qualifier Clarissa Fernandez of Argentina, 6-3, 6-1. She will face another qualifier, Olga Blahotova of the Czech Republic, in second round play tomorrow. Blahotva ended the run of 15-year-old Ashley Harkleroad of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 7-5, 6-3. Harkleroad had won three matches in the qualifier to reach the main draw.
"We are pleased to add four young, exciting players like Elena, Anastasia, Daja, and Clarisa to the Pilot Pen," said Anne Worcester, tournament director. "They are promising Tour players who have already produced some solid results yet their best tennis is still ahead of them."
While Venus and Fernandez have never played, the other semifinal will look much more familiar to those who have followed women's tennis of late. Serena and Jennifer Capriati have played seven times in the last two years, with Serena winning the last four encounters, and they will match two-hand backhands and one-hand forehands again on Thursday.

It is still highly unlikely, of course, for far bigger guns await than world No. 47 Paola Suarez, whom Fernandez defeated 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in just over two hours. Still, the first-ever all-Argentinian women's quarter-final guaranteed the troubled South American nation's first grand slam semi-finalist since Gabriela Sabatini at the 1995 US Open, and that will do for now.
