Clara Barton: Working
built 607 days ago
Grade 5-9 This biography relates Barton's accomplishments, making it clear how extraordinary her activities were for a woman of her time. Whitelaw makes use of her subject's original diaries from the Library of Congress, along with her published work. The chapters consist of easy, short sentences, lots of footnotes, and some direct quotes. Occasionally a box offers interesting incidental information. The black-and-white photographs and drawings are sharp with good contrast.
Clara was a very shy little girl in public. But with her family, she was not. Her dad taught her geography and history by telling Clara stories. Clara was able to talk, heal, and charm animals. Clara was not allowed to have dolls because her mother did not want Clara to love something that was not alive.
When Clara was eleven, her brother David became her first patient after he fell from a rafter in their unfinished barn. Clara stayed by his side for two years and learned to administer all his medicines, including the "great, loathsome crawling leeches."
