built 255 days ago
Legendary Shakespearean actress Claire Bloom shares her perspective on some of the Bard's most fascinating female characters including Juliet, Portia, Rosalind, Lady Anne and Gertrude. Bloom introduces each play and explains how a particular character fits into the story, then quickly switches into character and performs a riveting passage. Some of the character studies are supplemented by film clips of Bloom's earlier on-screen performances.

Brian Bedford and Claire Bloom, both critically acclaimed for their Shakespearean performances, portray the progression of life from infancy through "second childishness and mere oblivion" in this performance compiled by Bedford. To illustrate the seven stages, they enact scenes from "Henry VIII," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "As You Like It" and "Macbeth," among others of Shakespeare's plays.

Without props, scenery or make-up, Bloom transforms herself into women from six of Shakespeare's plays. The characters she presents range from Viola in the comedy, "Twelfth Night," to Juliet in the tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet."
