The American Civil Liberties Union has come to the aid of Idaho GOP Sen. Larry Craig. The civil-rights organization, which is dedicated to protecting and guaranteeing First Amendment rights, filed a friend-of-the-court brief Monday saying the police's airport bust was unconstitutional. Craig, who initially agreed to resign, has filed papers to withdraw his guilty plea and is fighting to remain in Washington. Click here to read more from CNN.com.

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against the City of Newark for ongoing free speech violations relating to a requirement that people must buy liability insurance in order to hold free speech protests in Newark. "We're tired of going round and round on this; the city needs to take free speech rights seriously, fix their forms and train their staff." said Bennet Zurofsky of Reitman Parsonnet.

ATLANTA — After pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union, Georgia's Commissioner of Insurance has agreed to allow Jon Lawson, a gay man, to purchase health insurance through a state plan designed to help people who are uninsured. Although the plan only requires that an applicant is insured for 18 months before joining the plan, Commissioner John Oxendine's office rejected Lawson's application, claiming that he was ineligible because had been covered as a domestic partner through his previous insurance plan.

Two juniors at the school, Lindsay Earls and Daniel James, decided to challenge this policy, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union. Their suit alleges that there was no specific reason for the new policy; it wasn’t sparked by an outbreak of student drug use, nor by academic team members who suddenly started to mix up Charlemagne and Charlie Chaplin. Instead, it seemed to be a concession to post-Columbine uneasiness, a feeling that something, anything, must be done to stop the rising tide of school violence (which, statistically, is not actually rising at all). The ACLU ... raised the issue of test reliability; James believed that a false positive could damage his reputation and employment prospects. Even though other drug testing policies for student in extracurricular activities have been upheld by courts, none of them involved academic classes.
