Citizenship: People
built 176 days ago
Citizenship class takes 8 to 10 weeks, but there is a lot to learn. Depending on how much English you know and how much time you have to study, many people need much more time. Some people need 1 year or more to study.

Citizenship was ... important to the people of ancient Rome, who often took part in their government. Roman citizenship was extended to foreign soldiers serving in the army and to men of conquered lands. By AD 212 almost all of the men in Roman provinces, except slaves, were citizens.

Education for citizenship is important because every society needs people to contribute effectively, in a variety of ways, to the future health and wellbeing of communities and the environment, locally, nationally and globally. Fostering active and responsible citizens contributes to the process of developing a healthy and vibrant culture of democratic participation. Moreover, as the Report of the Discipline Task Group, 2001, suggests, 'people are more likely to understand the reasons for policies and procedures, and therefore genuinely subscribe to them, when they have been actively involved in determining them.'
Despite the place of citizenship in several amendments, what is notable is the remarkably limited scope of citizenship in the Supreme Court's work. This is so since, while one must be a citizen to vote or hold federal office, most of the Constitution's key rights and liberties do not extend to citizens only. No less than the entire Bill of Rights applies to “the people”—citizen and the noncitizen alike.

In addition, migrants' transnational behavior has made national citizenship less relevant. As legal scholar Linda Bosniak has written, national affiliations do matter, but they are not necessarily paramount in many people's experiences.
