Circumcision: Procedures
built 657 days ago
Circumcision is usually a very safe surgical procedure. There are rarely any complications. As with any surgical procedure... there are occasional problems such as bleeding, infection, or injury to the penis. If there is a family history of bleeding tendencies or one of your previous newborns bled a lot during circumcision, be sure to inform your doctor of this fact.

Circumcision is a surgical procedure, and there is a risk of complications. Bleeding and infection are the most common complications of the procedure, according to the AMA. Longer term complications include infections, urinary fistulas, meatal stenosis, ulceration of the glans, removal of too much tissue, and secondary phimosis.
WebMD Symptom Checker Unstable or sick infant: Circumcision is contraindicated if the baby is unstable or sick. Circumcision is elective surgery and, as with other medically elective procedures, it should be delayed until the baby is well. Signs of stability include normal feeding, waste elimination, and maintenance of normal body temperature without an incubator or radiant warmer.

Like any surgical procedure, circumcision has some risks. However, the rate of problems after circumcision is low. Bleeding and infection in the circumcised area are the most common problems. Sometimes the skin of the newly exposed glans becomes irritated by the pressure of diapers and ammonia in the urine. The irritation is usually treated with petroleum ointment (Vaseline) put directly on the area. This problem will usually lessen after a few days.
Complications following newborn circumcision appear in between two and six of every 1,000 procedures. Most complications are minor. Bleeding occurs in half of the complications and is usually easy to control. Infections are rare and occur at the circumcision site, the opening to the bladder, or at the tip of the penis as a result of contact with urine or feces. Infections are indicated by fever and signs of inflammation, and are treatable with antibiotics.

To this balance, the Academy ... added the risks of the actual circumcision procedure. Such risks include infection, excessive bleeding, pain, and cosmetic concerns. Infection, as a result of the procedure, is very uncommon. So too, are incidences of excessive bleeding. A thorough family history regarding bleeding disorders can significantly decrease this risk. The issue of pain is very real, as research indicates that newborns are capable of feeling pain.
