Circumcision: Parents
built 629 days ago
"Circumcision is like a substantial and well-secured annuity; every year of life you draw the benefits. Parents cannot make a better paying investment for their little boys." - Dr Remondino, The History of Circumcision, 1891
Circumcision is often chosen by parents so that their son will not "look different" from his father or peers. The belief is that an intact (uncircumcised) boy will feel uncomfortable if he does not "match" others. In fact there is no published evidence whatsoever to support this belief.

Many parents say they don't want their son to feel "strange" or "weird" in the locker room at school.

Over the centuries there has been much written by Jewish scholars about the importance of circumcision. Support for circumcision in the Jewish community today is widespread. There is another perspective on circumcision that is not openly discussed. Contrary to common belief, circumcision has not always been practiced. Moses failed to circumcise his son (Exodus 4:25), and circumcision was totally neglected during the forty-year period in the wilderness (Joshua 5:5). Some Jews in the Hellenistic period (circa 300 b.c.e.-100 c.e.) chose not to circumcise their sons in an attempt to gain public acceptance.1 During the Reform movement in Germany in the 1840s, some parents did not circumcise their sons.
Infants who undergo circumcision may be fussy for some hours afterward, so parents should be prepared for crying, feeding problems, and sleep problems. Generally these go away within a day. In older boys, the penis may be painful, but the pain goes away gradually. A topical anesthetic ointment or spray may be used to relieve this temporary discomfort. There may ... be a bruise on the penis, which typically goes away with no particular attention.

Muslims and Jews practice circumcision as part of their religions. The practice has gone beyond religious boundaries to become almost universal [a gross exaggeration] in the United States. The parents who sued Quincy Medical Center claimed circumcision was against their religious beliefs. ["Claimed"? As if they didn't know what their own religious beliefs are?]
