Healing time for newborns after circumcision usually is about 1 week. Place petroleum jelly (Vaseline) onto the area after changing the diaper. This helps protect the healing area. Some swelling and yellow crust formation around the site is normal.

The overall evidence of the benefits and harms of circumcision is so evenly balanced that it does not support recommending circumcision as a routine procedure for newborns. There is therefore no indication that the position taken by the CPS in 1982 should be changed.

Adult circumcision should be performed with delicate sutures that results in level of healing comparable to a newborn circumcision. Individuals with urethral (urinary channel) defects should postpone circumcision as the foreskin may be used in repair of a congenital defect.
