Circumcision: Foreskins
built 643 days ago
Circumcision is the surgical removal of foreskin from the penis of an infant boy. The operation is usually performed for cultural, religious, or cosmetic reasons rather than for medical reasons. Some organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, maintain there is insufficient evidence that routine circumcision is medically necessary. However, there is research suggesting that some health benefits may be gained, including a slightly decreased risk of developing penile cancer, a lower chance of urinary tract infections in newborns, and a potentially lessened risk of HIV transmission.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis. It is often performed in healthy boys for cultural or religious reasons. In the U.S., circumcision of a newborn boy is usually done before he leaves the hospital. Jewish boys... are circumcised when they are 8 days old.

Circumcision removes complex tissue containing thousands of highly specialised fine touch receptors and nerve fibres. The loss of sexual sensitivity is proportional to the amount of foreskin removed. A tight circumcision that prevents the (remaining) foreskin's movement during intercourse is particularly damaging. Men circumcised as infants may be unaware of this, but many men circumcised as adults report a definite loss.
Circumcision of a little boy Circumcision means ‘cutting around’. In boys, the front part of the (round) foreskin is cut off, so that the head of the penis is permanently uncovered. In girls, a similar incision can be made in the foreskin of the clitoris. In addition to this relatively light and symbolic operation, there are more crippling forms of mutiilation of girls’ genitals.

Circumcision may be indicated for certain medical reasons: vesicoureteral reflux, kidney or bladder infections, posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), or true phimosis (narrowing of the foreskin). Parents for family, cultural, or religious reasons may request circumcision. Although circumcision is often done shortly after birth, the procedure may be delayed for certain reasons:

Circumcision is often carried out for religious reasons. For example, in religions such as Judaism and Islam, it is an important ritual. Some cultures practice circumcision for hygiene reasons, and see the foreskin as unnecessary, or as causing health problems.
