Circumcision: Babies
built 630 days ago
Circumcision is usually performed by the obstetrician, in the hospital. When it is done for religious reasons, other persons may do the surgery as part of a ceremony, after the baby is discharged from the hospital.

After the circumcision, you may notice a small amount of blood on the baby's diaper. If the bloodstain is larger than the size of a quarter, call your doctor right away. In addition, you should call your doctor if a Plastibell device was used during the circumcision and the device doesn't fall off within 10 to 12 days. If there is a bandage on the penis instead of a Plastibell, the bandage should be changed each time you change your son's diaper. This will help prevent infection. Signs of infection ... signal the need to call your doctor.
Your doctor or hospital nurse will instruct you on caring for the circumcision site. For a week, apply a protective lubricant over the site every time you change baby's diaper. For about a week, the circumcised site goes through the typical healing process. Initially, it is swollen, then a yellow scab appears. The swelling and the scab resolve by one week. Be sure your doctor informs you how to tell if the circumcision site becomes infected.

Lander et al., found that babies circumcised without pain relief "exhibited homogeneous responses that consisted of sustained elevation of heart rate and high pitched cry throughout the circumcision and following. became ill following circumcision (choking and apnea)."[3] A 2004 Cochrane review, which compared the dorsal penile nerve block and EMLA (topical anaesthesia) found both anaesthetics appear safe, but neither of them completely eliminated pain.[58] Razmus et al. reported that newborns circumcised with the dorsal block and the ring block in combination with the concentrated oral sucrose had the lowest pain scores.[59] Ng et al. found that EMLA cream, in addition to local anaesthetic, effectively reduces the sharp pain induced by needle puncture.[60]
Your baby will need a local anesthetic (dorsal penile nerve block or subpubic block technique), given by a needle in the area where the circumcision is done. EMLA cream should ... be used to reduce the pain of giving the needle for the anesthetic.
