Circumcision: American Academy
built 658 days ago
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the benefits aren't strong enough to recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns. The AAP leaves the decision up to parents — and supports use of pain relief for infants who have the procedure.

Despite the possible benefits and risks, circumcision is neither essential nor detrimental to a boy's health. The AAP and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) do not endorse the procedure as a way to prevent any of the medical conditions mentioned previously. The AAP ... does not find sufficient evidence to medically recommend circumcision or argue against it.

Donate with CAF CharityCard Despite the obviously irrational cruelty of circumcision, the profit incentive in American medical practice is unlikely to allow science or human rights principles to interrupt the highly lucrative American circumcision industry. It is now time for European medical associations loudly to condemn the North American medical community for participating in and profiting from what is by any standard a senseless and barbaric sexual mutilation of innocent children. The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated there is no absolute indication for routine circumcision. However, a study involving 2,500 babies determined that the uncircumcised male is 20 times more likely to develop a urinary tract infection than the circumcised infant. The Academy has modified their statement to say there are potential benefits and risks.
The American Academy of Family Physicians has described the medical literature on infant circumcision as "controversial and conflicting." It advises parents to discuss the procedure with their doctor before making a decision. The American Medical Association supports the findings of the AAP.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Pediatric Urologic Society state the following: "Circumcision of the male neonate cannot be considered an essential component of adequate total health care." Furthermore, the American Academy of Pediatrics states "A program of education leading to continuing good personal hygiene would offer all the advantages of routine circumcision without the attendant surgical risk."
