Ciprofloxacin should not be used as first-line therapy unless the culture and sensitivity findings show resistance to usual therapy. The interactions with caffeine and theophylline can result in serious toxicity in the elderly. Adjust dose for renal function.

C Path Ciprofloxacin could inhibit the metabolism of the medications listed in Table 1, and these interactions could result in adverse reactions. For example, ciprofloxacin reduces the clearance of theophylline, and seizures have been reported when ciprofloxacin has been taken with theophylline. To prevent this, the dose of theophylline should be reduced, and theophylline plasma concentrations monitored when a patient begins taking ciprofloxacin.

Ciprofloxacin Injection should be administered to adults by intravenous infusion over a period of 60 minutes at dosages described in the Dosage Guidelines table. Slow infusion of a dilute solution into a larger vein will minimize patient discomfort and reduce the risk of venous irritation.
