Cipro: Drugs
built 614 days ago
Cipro (Ciprofloxin) is a member of the quinolone group of antibiotics. Peak blood levels are reached 1-2 hours after dosing. If you take an ANTACID containing magnesium or aluminum hydroxide (most have one or both), it will bind up to 90% of the drug, rendering it mostly ineffective. Same is true with zinc, iron, and calcium. It reaches optimum blood levels if taken 2 hours after a meal. If you take THEOPHYLLINE) for asthma, Cipro slows down the breakdown of Theophylline, and it will cause severe nervousness as you would expect with an overdose (could be fatal!).

Cipro kills a variety of bacteria, and is frequently used to treat infections in many parts of the body. However, be sure to stop taking Cipro and notify your doctor immediately at the first sign of a skin rash or any other allergic reaction. Although quite rare, serious and occasionally fatal allergic reactions--some following the first dose--have been reported in people receiving this type of antibacterial drug. Some reactions have been accompanied by collapse of the circulatory system, loss of consciousness, swelling of the face and throat, shortness of breath, tingling, itching, and hives. Fever and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) are other potential symptoms that should send you to the doctor immediately.
D[U]ring the anthrax attacks, Bayer AG, the German pharmaceutical giant and manufacturer of the anthrax-fighting drug Cipro, experienced a windfall. The sudden demand for Cipro could not have come at a better time for a company that had been in a slump and was hemorrhaging due to a considerable operating-profit shortfall. The financial press's accounts of how Bayer was scouting for bailout partners soon gave way to detailing Bayer's moves to triple its production of Cipro. With Cipro, Bayer was vying for some of the $643 million the Bush administration had planned to put toward increasing stockpiles of antibiotics.

Cipro has ... been linked to tendon ruptures. A recent study performed on lab rats in Germany discovered that the rodents' Achilles tendons endured "degenerative alterations" soon after Cipro therapy started. Researchers now deem that Cipro may have a toxic effect on connective tissue formations, a theory that may justify tendon ruptures. In the study, ruptures continued to occur even after the animals stopped receiving the drug. Cipro tendon rupture may be as high as 1 in 250.
Cipro (Ciprofloxacin), a member of the quinolone group of antibiotics, is used to treat bacterial infections of the abdomen, skin, bones, urinary tract, and lower respiratory system. Doctors ... prescribe the antibiotic for the treatment of bronchial infections, typhoid fever, prostate gland infections and tuberculosis. Cipro gained national attention when doctors announced that the antibacterial drug is effective against inhalation anthrax.
