Apple went with Cingular as its exclusive carrier for the iPhone. This annoucement was made Jan 9th along with the mention of changing its name to Apple, Inc. No doubt that today’s announcement from AT&T that it will phase out the Cingular brand came as a surprise to Apple as well. I’m sure part of the reason Apple chose Cingular was due to the brand recognition…the YOUNG and HIP (hip?) brand recognition…that Cingular developed over the years. The brand was hailed by some as a savior to AT&T Wireless customers particularly in the realm of customer service.

HP's new iPAQ hw6920 Mobile Messenger will be offered to Cingular customers in the US. The hw6920 runs on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 and offers a host of connectivity options, including GPRS/EDGE and Wi-Fi to access the Internet.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T Wireless customer Kenneth Shroyer noticed that after Cingular took over AT&T, his cell phone service became worse and worse. When he called Cingular to complain, they told him he would need to enter into a new agreement with Cingular in order to get a new "chip" for his phone that would improve his wireless service.
