Cinderella: Prince
built 643 days ago
At the end of Mr. Welch’s staging, Cinderella finds true love not with the handsome, narcissistic prince, but with his mild-mannered valet, Dandini. “I think that the subtle, implicit message of the traditional Cinderella story -- that someone will magically appear to rescue you from a bad situation – is a terrible message to send to a young child. It’s about standing up for yourself, making your own decisions, choosing your own path, your own love,” commented Mr. Welch.

When the wedding with the prince was to be held, the two false sisters came, wanting to gain favor with Cinderella and to share her good fortune. When the bridal couple walked into the church, the older sister walked on their right side and the younger on their left side, and the pigeons pecked out one eye from each of them. Afterwards, as they came out of the church, the older one was on the left side, and the younger one on the right side, and then the pigeons pecked out the other eye from each of them. And ... for their wickedness and falsehood, they were punished with blindness as long as they lived.

One of the most unusual versions of the story is the Irish tale, The Bracket Bull, in which the Cinderella character is actually a boy - this may be due to Ireland's traditionally matriarchal society. Rather than a fairy godmother, it is a bull, which grants his wishes so that he may go to the feast. In this story a princess sets out to find the handsome young man who dropped his shoe as he ran away. Many men try to persuade her that they are the one she is looking for, but in the end she finds the boy of her dreams and they live happily ever after.

It's Cinderella's fault you've been waiting around all your life for Prince Charming. The fairy tale told to you as a little girl implied that one day a perfect guy would show up on his white stallion, ready to immediately fill your life with love, adoration and total bliss. He'd fit that glass slipper on your foot, and your life would immediately be transformed from sweeping cinders to glittering balls and true love.

The 1957 version was directed by Ralph Nelson and starred Julie Andrews as Cinderella. It ... starred Howard Lindsay (The King), Dorothy Stickney (The Queen), Edith Adams (Fairy Godmother), Kaye Ballard (Portia), Alice Ghostley (Joy) [the stepsisters], Ilka Chase (Stepmother), Jon Cypher (The Prince), and Iggie Wolfington (The Steward).

In many variants of the tale, the prince is told that Cinderella can not possibly be the one, as she is too dirty and ragged. Often, this is said by the stepmother or stepsisters. In the Grimms' version, both the stepmother and the father urge it.[11] The prince ... insists on her trying. Cinderella arrives and proves her identity by fitting into the slipper or other item (in some cases she has kept the other).
