Cigarettes for Europe Marlboro cigarettes were not always sold using the image of this macho figure. When Marlboro cigarettes were first introduced in the 1920s, they were marketed to women, with the slogan "Mild as May." This approach was successful until World War II (1939-45), when slow sales caused Marlboro packs to be withdrawn from the market. The cigarettes were revived in the 1950s, as the first medical research linking cigarette smoking with cancer began to reach the public. It was thought that Marlboro cigarettes, with their filter, might offer smokers the illusion of a reduced health risk. However, the filter was regarded as effeminate by many men, who made up the bulk of the market.

Cigarette manufacturers had already begun creating different types of cigarettes—filter tips during the 1950s, then low-tar cigarettes during the 1960s and 1970s—and marketed these products not to create more customers but to capture their competitor's customers. By the 1970s... Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds had gained considerable ground on their competition, making the industry essentially a battle between the two behemoths. Philip Morris gained the upper hand in 1976 when its Marlboro brand passed R.J. Reynolds' Winston.

The amazing Marlboro cigarettes brand began in England 1847 and was initially targeted at female smokers. Aiming at this market segment was not successful, so in the 1920's Marlboro was re-targeted to female smokers in the US. In this campaign it was stressed that Marlboro was a 'mild' cigarette. These efforts continued into World War II when the brand was taken off the market.
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 30, 2003-- A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control found higher levels of tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) in Marlboro cigarettes sold around the world from 1999-2001 compared to cigarettes manufactured by local companies in other countries. The higher levels of TSNAs found in most domestic cigarettes is a result of the inclusion of U.S. grown tobacco. The study ... found that the level of TSNAs in Marlboro is not significantly different from a comparison brand purchased in the United States. As the author of the study told the Washington Post, "It's not just Marlboros, but most American cigarettes that have these considerably higher levels of nitrosamines."
