Cigarettes: Brands
built 628 days ago
Lucky Strike is a brand of cigarettes. The brand was first introduced in 1871 as a smoking mixture by R.A. Patterson in Richmond, Virginia. In 1916 it was introduced as a finished cigarette in a dark green pack by the American Tobacco Company. The pack was changed from green to white in 1942. In a famous advertising campaign that used the slogan "Lucky Strike Green has gone to war," the company claimed the change was made because the copper used in the green colour was needed for World War II. This claim... has been debunked: The change was made to attract female smokers.

The leaves of the tobacco plant are first dried to make cigarettes. Certain brands are then treated with a variety of chemicals, and many additional ingredients may be added. Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic; ... trace amounts of the majority of these chemicals are present during combustion of any plant material and cannot be considered an inherent artifact of tobacco smoke only. The amounts of these ingredients can vary widely from one brand or type of cigarette to the next. This is especially true of the tar and nicotine content, the range of which is so extreme that an entire carton of some brands of cigarettes (e.g., Carlton) might contain less tar and/or nicotine than a single cigarette of a "full flavor" brand.Major tobacco companies also pack their cigarettes differently, using the longer more potent section of the tobacco leaf in the end, and moving the short cut pieces in the front (also known as "shake"). The hybrid tobacco leaves a more potent addiction effect this way. Relatively unpopular cigerette companies offer "no additive" cigarettes that are viewed by some as marginally healthier.

Although discount cigarettes had for years eroded market share of the premium brands, in the late 1990s premium labels regained ground. As of 1999, premium brands accounted for 73.4 percent of all domestic cigarette sales by volume, up slightly from the year before. Earlier in the decade, premium volume had sunk as low as 68.6 percent due to the popularity of discount brands, which gained favor rapidly during the 1980s. Interestingly, premium's share rebounded just as tax increases and litigation caused cigarette prices to soar.

Tobacco used to produce Davidoff cigarettes comes from the Dominican Republic and selected tobacco plants of the USA. The decision to switch to the Dominican Republic as the main tobacco supplier was made in 1991 and was widely discussed as a very risky one. Those who prefer Davidoff cigarettes were not familiar with Dominican tobacco. But as quality is what counts at the end, Davidoff fans enjoyed the change of the blend and the brand became even more popular.

In response to these concerns, several cigarette manufacturers introduced a number of alternative cigarettes, including menthol, filter-tipped, and low-tar cigarettes. Menthol cigarettes smell and taste "cooler" because they are flavored with a substance found in mint oil, although they pose the same health risks. Filters help block some materials from entering the body, but their effectiveness varies from brand to brand, and even low-tar cigarettes expose the body to potentially harmful levels of tar. Recently, manufacturers have sought to reduce the amount of nicotine in cigarettes as well.
