Triple H received a shot at the WWF Championship on the January 25, 1999 edition of RAW in an "I Quit" match against The Rock, but was forced to quit or see his aide Chyna chokeslammed by Kane. Chyna attacked Triple H after the match and joined the Corporation, betraying him. At WrestleMania XV Triple H wrestled as a face for what would be the last time in several months when he beat Kane with the aid of Chyna, who was thought to have rejoined DX. Later on in the night, he betrayed his long-time friend and fellow DX member X-Pac by helping heel Shane McMahon retain the European Championship... turning heel and taking Chyna with him. This decision earned him the hatred of many fans, and helped push Triple H further in the direction of the WWF Championship. Triple H then joined the Corporation, briefly placing him on the same side as The Rock.

Chyna won the Intercontinental Championship in a Good Housekeeping Match that saw everything from eggs and cake batter to the kitchen sink. Various household items and appliances were scattered throughout the ring and it was all fair game. Jarrett’s sexist comments over the previous weeks leading up to this match were what fueled the fire for the confrontation. Chyna took out her anger on the champ and hit a guitar shot for the win, as she became the first woman to hold the Intercontinental Championship.

Unlike the other Divas, Chyna's unique physique allowed her to fight other men on the roster and for the fans to accept these battles. At the 1999 Royal Rumble, Chyna became the first woman to compete in the Royal Rumble match. A few months later, she beat Jeff Jarrett to become the first and only woman to hold the prestigious Intercontinental Championship.

Chyna first held the Intercontinental Championship on October 17, 1999 when she defeated Jeff Jarrett in a Good Housekeeping match at the No Mercy pay-per-view. Her first reign ended when she lost to Chris Jericho at the Armageddon pay-per-view on December 12 of that year.

Prior to his relationship with Stephanie McMahon, Levesque had previously been in a relationship with Chyna. Following his first WWF championship run, Triple H was put into a program with Stephanie McMahon that culminated in Triple H "marrying" McMahon. During the program, in which Triple H and Stephanie were heels, Levesque and McMahon became personally involved in real life. On October 23, 2003, long after the couple had divorced in the storylines, they married for real.
