Chupacabra: El Chupacabra
built 634 days ago
El Chupacabra or the "goat sucker" is an animal thought to be unknown to science that systemically kills animals by sucking their blood out – leaving their bodies dry. The animal has been seen in places like Puerto Rico, Mexico, Mainland USA and more recently Chile. The creature's name originated with the discovery of some dead goats in Puerto Rico with puncture wounds in their necks and their blood allegedly drained. Thousands of victims have been reported – particularly in South America.

El Chupacabra is most commonly reported to be a reptile-like creature with pea-green skin, and sharp spines or quills running down along its back. The chupacabra is a two-legged animal, three to four feet tall. However, some have claimed that they are actually closer to the size of a small bear. Although the chupacabra is generally bipedal, most reports claim that it uses its strong hind legs like a kangaroo to jump long distances rather than walking. In at least one sighting, the creature hopped over 20 feet (6 m) in the air. They are said to have a dog or panther-like muzzle and face, a forked tongue, large fangs, and red, mesmerizing eyes.

Since its first attack on the Puerto Rican goats, El Chupacabra has attacked livestock all over North and South America, making its way as far as Chile in 2000. Its most destructive time was in the winter of 1995. There were 35 sightings in Cavanas, Puerto Rico in the span of only three months. 69 chickens, goats and ducks were ... killed in Chupacabra-style in 1995 in Florida. Then in late 1996, Mexico experienced a rash of Chupacabra attacks.

Public alarm over El Chupacabra has spread to Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Armed searches for El Chupacabra have been made in recent years in Argentina and Chile, as a reaction to more than 200 unexplained animal mutilations. So far, no conclusive findings have been reported.

The name Chupacabra translates literally from Spanish as "goat-sucker". It comes from the creature's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Grunch Sightings began in New Orleans in the late 1960's and Chupacabra, Puerto Rico in the early 1990s, and have since been reported as far north as the Carolinas, and as far south as Chile. The Chupacabra, as it is known now, was called 'El Vampiro de Moca' {in Puerto Rico}, some years ago.

Chupacabra takes it name from an elusive, mythical being from Latin-American folklore, but the band cautions others against translating it literally. Instead, Chupacabra's members say they chose the moniker in reference to the yearning of the human spirit to be connected with something greater. The band sees music becoming less of a uni-cultural entity separated by borders and language, and believes the integration of the world's sounds is as inevitable as the co-mingling of its people. In opening themselves and their sound to the influences of the world's music collectively, Chupacabra has indeed connected with a great wealth of musical power.
