LYCOS RETRIEVER
Chrysler 300

The current Chrysler 300 is nothing short of sensational. Except for the fact that it's built in the same plant and can be had with the same 3.5-liter V6 engine in lower-end models (there's ... a base model with a 2.7-liter V6), the new 300 shares practically nothing with the outgoing 300M. The new unibody structure mounts a rear-drive drivetrain and incorporates suspension components originally developed for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The styling is aggressively American with more than a taste of gangster influence. The best news, of course, is sitting up at the top of the range, the new 300C model powered by the new 5.7-liter "Hemi" V8 engine making 340 hp. After getting our first taste of the 300C, we wrote, "Chrysler has reintroduced the idea of rear-wheel drive and V8 power to buyers shopping for a premium family sedan and/or entry-level luxury car. Will the 300 be the car that sends Toyota back to the drawing board and forces BMW to slash prices?

The outgoing Chrysler LH-platform cars (Chrysler 300M, Concorde, LHS and Dodge Intrepid) were always remembered for their sharp, coupe-like look. They were the best examples of Tom Gale’s "cab-forward" designs. However, since Daimler-Benz bought the company in 1998, everything was changed. Not only the American company started using Mercedes parts and engineering know-how, but its styling theme was ... changed. You can see that from the trio of new cars - Crossfire, Pacifica and now, 300. These cars have a common styling philosophy - conservative profile for easy engineering, radical details to suit American taste.

Officially offered for sale on February 10, 1955, the first Chrysler 300 was athletic-looking, but it didn't have a letter at the end of its name. With 300 horsepower aboard, it was among the quickest cars of its time, getting to 60 mph in just 9.8 seconds, according to a test in Mechanix Illustrated by "Uncle Tom" McCahill, who ... spurred the car up to a full 130 mph. But beyond being the most powerful production car of its time, the first Chrysler 300 was also among the best handling thanks to a heavy-duty suspension. It was also very luxurious and handsome in a bulky linebacker sort of way.

As an added safety feature on the Chrysler 300, Chrysler has introduced available self-sealing tires. If a sharp object punctures* your tire, a special sealant helps to reduce your chance of getting a flat by filling the puncture and minimizing the loss of air pressure.

To help keep all that power in check, the Chrysler 300 features an advanced braking system. Large 4-wheel-disc antilock brakes are standard on all 300 models. 300 Touring, 300 Limited and 300C add ABS, Traction Control and ESP. Air ducts channel air to cool front brakes, enhancing performance and brakes life. ABS increases directional stability under extreme braking conditions. The Emergency Brake Assist feature can detect a driver's intended panic stop, and apply optimum brake pressure to help achieve minimum stopping distances.
