Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive condition characterized by airflow obstruction, where the ability to empty air out of the lungs is impaired. COPD includes emphysema, chronic bronchitis or a combination of both conditions. Asthma is ... a disease characterized by airflow obstruction, but it is generally not considered to be a part of COPD. Asthma is more reversible than COPD. Some patients with COPD may also have some degree of asthma. (More)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases that affect approximately 10 million Americans. COPD encompasses such conditions as emphysema, chronic bronchitis and refractory asthma. An additional 14 million Americans are estimated to suffer from undiagnosed or developing COPD, which is the only one of the five leading causes of death that is on the rise. Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1), an inherited disorder that is frequently called “genetic emphysema,” can result in life-threatening lung disease in adults and liver disease in adults and children.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)... known as [C]hronic obstructive airway disease (COAD), is a group of diseases characterized by the pathological limitation of airflow in the airway that is not fully reversible. COPD is the umbrella term for chronic bronchitis, emphysema and a range of other lung disorders. It is most often due to tobacco smoking,[1] but can be due to other airborne irritants such as coal dust, asbestos or solvents, as well as congenital conditions such as alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. It is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S.[2]
