In Chronic Illness, Dr. Len Sperry shows how he approaches work with clients with chronic diseases such as Parkinson's disease, osteoarthritis, or lupus. His approach is to focus on what the disease means to the client and how this viewpoint affects his or her life. This biopsychosocial approach helps fill in the gaps in medical interventions, which do not look at the broader cultural and psychological effects of a disease on a patient.

The Center for Excellence in Chronic Illness Care was established in 1999 to study the unique experience of chronic illness as it affects patients, families and survivors. The Center's work focuses on multiple areas in which Yale School of Nursing (YSN) faculty has a strong tradition of research expertise. These areas include AIDS/HIV, cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The Center's ultimate aim... is not to study specific diseases in isolation, but to understand the overall experience of chronic illness. The Center examines the impact that chronic illness has on individuals, and the ways in which the health care system can empower patients and families to manage that impact to achieve a better quality of life.
