Chronic Illness: Persons
built 190 days ago
Regardless of the condition, adolescents have similar feelings about chronic illness -- apprehension, rage, self-pity and bitterness. As with their parents' reactions, these are normal. It may take a little while to accept the situation, but it will happen. Parents and the medical team should respect the adolescent's need for privacy and independence. Information should be given to the young person in a variety of ways: verbal, reading materials, diagrams and videos if available. Regular opportunities should be given to the young person to talk about concerns.

A person with a chronic illness is exempt from complying with FSE&T requirements. To exempt a person, the Client Assessment Unit (CAU) must find that the illness or injury is serious enough to prevent the client from engaging in employment or training activities. To be found chronically ill, a physician or licensed or certified psychologist must verify that the person's physical or mental impairment, either by itself or in conjunction with age or other factors, prevents the client from working or engaging in FSE&T activities.
