Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Patients
built 389 days ago
Abstract- Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (primary fibrositis syndrome, major affective disorder ,etc.) have elevated IgG serum antibodies to multiple common viruses. Only IgGrubella antibodies are positively correlated with the intensity of symptoms and have a height that is clearly significant compared to healthy controls. The lymphotrophic properties of the rubella virus could account for the multiple elevated antibodies. Adult women are over-represented in the population of patients with chronic fatigue, and are especially susceptible to developing such symptoms following exposure to attenuated rubella new more potent strain of live rubella vaccine strain RA27/3 (my.02 this vaccine is the one using the aborted fetal tissue cells) was introduced in 1979. Within three years, reports of patients with chronic fatigue began surfacing in the literature. Considering all this, the possible role of rubella immunizations in the etiology of chronic fatigue syndrome deserves further study.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), a long-term illness whose etiology remains elusive, is diagnosed in an estimated 500,000 people in the United States. A patient with CFS may have oral manifestations, such as TMJ disorders and Sjogren's syndrome. In addition, commonly prescribed medications used in management of this syndrome may induce adverse reactions in the oral cavity.

Some studies have observed that a subgroup of patients who fit the strict criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome ... has a condition known as neurally mediated hypotension (NMH). NMH causes a dramatic drop in blood pressure when standing up, even for as short a time as 10 minutes. Its immediate effect can be lightheadedness, nausea, and fainting. A less severe hypotension condition known as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is also associated with CFS. An estimated 30% of CFS patients may have POTS, and some experts believe that the key to understanding CFS will eventually be found in understanding orthostatic intolerance. To further confound the issue, different CFS patients display different types of orthostatic intolerances.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by at least six months of severe fatigue not helped by bed rest. Patients ... report muscle pain and impaired memory. The CDC estimates more than 1 million Americans have the condition, with the rate four times higher among women.

An arsenical drug, thiacetarsamide sodium, was administered to four horses with a diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), already treated unsuccessfully with different medications. The CFS-like lethargy, with accompanying symptoms and signs, of the four animals obtained a complete remission after intravenous treatment with this drug at low dosage (0.1 mg/Kg/day). No adverse side effects were ever noticed. This clinical response was associated with recovery from anaemia and decrease of muscular enzyme values in two of the four horses. In all patients, micrococci-like bacteria found before treatment adhering to the outer surface of many red blood cells, disappeared at post-treatment controls. Considerations are made on the possible action of an arsenical drug, used isolately, in the treatment of CFS.

Very little is known with certainty about the cause and stubborn persistence of fatigue in the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). There are... reports of nutrient deficiencies associated with CFS as well as reports of specific nutrient supplementation providing partial relief of symptoms. B vitamins appear to be especially relevant. Studies found preliminary evidence for a reduced functional status of vitamins B1, B2, and, especially, B6, in CFS patients compared to healthy controls. The minerals magnesium and zinc may also have clinical relevance to CFS. Several studies have revealed lower erythrocyte magnesium levels in CFS patients than in controls, although not all studies have confirmed these findings.
