LYCOS RETRIEVER
Christy Martin: Lucia Rijker
built 635 days ago
It wasn't just a cat fight, more a tiger brawl that broke out on Monday, Feb. 28 at a public workout session for David Reid and Christy Martin in Los Angeles. The session was part of the pre-fight hype for Friday's Reid-Trinidad extravaganza. Martin was scheduled for the undercard. Don King was there, bent on tantalizing the multiple TV crews and reporters. David Reid was in the ring working out when female boxing star, Christy Martin encountered world champ Lucia Rijker in the audience. Fur flew and the L.A.

The hate began in 1999 when Martin appeared at a press conference at the old Olympic Auditorium to publicize a pending fight. Suddenly Rijker, who had been hungrily seeking a fight with Martin, appeared during the press conference to challenge the West Virginia boxer to a showdown. It quickly turned into an ugly scene where both women exchanged punches and noses were bloodied.

On April 20, 2005 at Isle of Capri Casino in Lula, Mississippi, USA, Christy returned to the ring to prepare for a possible upcoming bout with Lucia Rijker. She weighed in at 144 lbs and knocked out Lana Alexander (134½ lbs) of Nashville, Tennessee at 1:10 in the second round of a scheduled six-rounder. Alexander fell to 2-7-0 (1 KO) while Martin improved her record to 46-3-2 (32 KO).

Martin's best days were behind her. A big money bout with Lucia Rijker in 2005 was signed and sealed, but not delivered; a gym injury to Rijker caused the bout's cancellation. Reportedly, tickets weren't selling so well, anyway. The audience for women's boxing was drying up.

Martin, at 46-3-2, 32 KOs, has fought everybody (except Rijker) while Holm, at 10-1-2, 4 KOs, has only recently started to fight rated fighters. In fact, when Martin turned pro, in 1989, Holm was eight years old.

After St. John, Martin challenged the much bigger Laila Ali in an enormously popular match that saw more than 8,000 people crowd a Mississippi casino to watch the two female boxing icons. Ali won by knockout but Martin had proved her mettle. Rijker seethed with anger.
