Christy claimed she was playing possum to lure Ali in the ring, when bottom line, it was only an excseu for her poor performance. Period. The end. It wasn't the first time she has been out of shape, but on some of those other occasions she was fighting featherweights and inexperienced fighters with losing records. At Christy's peak, years ago, Mia couldn't have run one round with her. But Christy's getting older, and her motivation to train is obviously not what it used to be.

A year ago Martin, 35, was thinking about retirement. She won a ragged decision over Mia St. John in December and was frustrated with the promoters, who she says still haven't paid her the $305,000 she's owed. She and Jim, her husband and trainer, started thinking seriously about having a baby. But she wanted to fight Ali and had been trying to work out a deal since 2001. Martin was drawn to the super-middleweight champ just as many people are. She's charismatic, good-looking and has one of the most famous names in the world.

Laila Ali and Christy Martin, set to meet on Aug. 23 in the biggest fight in women's boxing history, resorted to the promotional tactics of the men by brawling at the press conference announcing the match. Nice work ladies.
