Christopher Tolkien: Fathers
built 641 days ago
Further, in an interview Christopher Tolkien said that he has just pieced together parts of his father's unfinished manuscripts and barely added anything on his own. His creative inputs were limited to a few sentences here and there that were necessary to maintain the smooth flow of the story.
J.R.R Tolkien's oldest story of Middle-earth The Children of Húrin has been painstakingly edited together by Christopher from his father's many drafts, and this book is the culmination of a tireless thirty-year endeavour by him to bring J.R.R. Tolkien's vast body of unpublished work to a wide audience.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born of British parents in Bloemfontein, South Africa, an area known as the Orange Free State. His father, Arthur Tolkien, had left England in order to take up a senior position with a bank in the colony. Just when he began to walk he was bitten by a tarantula and was saved by a nurse who sucked out the poison.
Birth of Tolkien's father, Arthur Reuel Tolkien. Later in his life, he moved to the city of Bloemfontein, Orange Free State of South Africa, as a local banker. The name "TOLKIEN" (tol-teen) is derived from the German surname "TOLLKÜHN", meaning "fool-hardly." JRR Tolkien's great-grandfather migrated from Germany to England during the 18th century; ... the Tolkien family had long been "Englished."
Tolkien as a soldier in WW1 Tolkien family life was generally lived on the genteel side of poverty. However, the situation worsened in 1904, when Mabel Tolkien was diagnosed as having diabetes, incurable at that time. She died on 14 November of that year leaving the two orphaned boys effectively destitute. At this point Father Francis took over, and made sure of the boys' material as well as spiritual welfare, although in the short term they were boarded with an unsympathetic aunt-by-marriage, Beatrice Suffield, and then with a Mrs Faulkner.

Christopher writes: "No doubt my father was led from his words here 'It is unlikely, as a consideration of the ultimate origin of this race would make clearer...' to write that 'consideration'.... And that is the the essay on Orcs, which Christopher provided in Morgoth's Ring with what has to be one of the most confusing and debilitating preambles in the history of literary scholarship.
