After coming back from Europe, Reeve decided that he wanted to focus solely on acting. In Cornell, he was still required to take classes such as Intellectual History and Physics. He managed to convince theater director John Clancy and the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences that, as a theater major, he would achieve more in Juilliard than in Cornell. They agreed that his first year at Juilliard would be counted as his senior year at Cornell.[16]

October 11, 2004; Reeve died in the hospital yesterday following complications of a systemic infection. He was 52. Reeve was mentioned by Sen. John Kerry during the debate last Friday night. Kerry said, "Chris is a friend of mine." Reeve died of a heart failure while in a coma secondary to a systemic bacterial infection due to pressure sores that regularly became infected. They take a very long time to heal, even when treated with antibiotics.

Kerry, campaigning in Santa Fe on Monday, prefaced a speech he was giving with a tribute to Reeve, whom he described as a longtime friend and as "America's hero." Kerry said he was "really blown away" when Reeve left him a cell phone message Saturday.
