Christopher Marlowe: Queen Elizabeth
built 627 days ago
Christopher Marlowe met with three friends (who were ... known to be men were spies and secret agents for Francis Walsingham) in Stepney. They had met at a house owned by Eleanor Bull who was the sister Blanche Parry, cousins of John Dee with close connections with Queen Elizabeth. The house was believed to have been a safe meeting place for the agents of Francis Walsingham and Lord Burghley.
Students study the life of Marlowe, the background of Elizabethan theater, the roots of Elizabethan tragedy, and the themes of the play, "an object lesson in choice and consequences." Can be downloaded with Adobe Acrobat or used from the Web.
Marlowe scholars will welcome this lucidly written book. In addition to chapter-by-chapter examinations of each of Marlowe's plays, Cole provides a brief biographical sketch of Marlowe and a description of the theater world in Queen Elizabeth's time...The infinite riches in this little book are not to be missed by any serious Marlovian scholar. Upper-division undergraduate upward.

Marlowe is often described today as homosexual. Some believe that the question of whether an Elizabethan was "gay" or "homosexual" in a modern sense is anachronistic; for the Elizabethans, what is often today termed homosexual or bisexual was more likely to be recognised as simply a sexual act, rather than an exclusive sexual orientation and identity (see History of homosexuality).
