Christopher Marlowe: Plays
built 655 days ago
It was on this date, February 6, 1564, that British poet and playwright Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury, the son of a shoemaker. He ... studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, excelling in the Bible and Reformation theologians as well as philosophy and history. Pausing from his studies to work in secret for the British government, Marlowe returned to take an M.A. degree, which the university was reluctant to grant, believing that he had converted to Roman Catholicism. But the Queen's Privy Council settled the matter in Marlowe's favor.

Instead of taking holy orders, Marlowe went to London and became a dramatist. He made important friends, including Sir Walter Raleigh, who had started the first colony in Virginia. Most likely, Marlowe began writing plays on leaving Cambridge. Marlowe wrote his dramas in blank verse. It is assumed that the first part of his TAMBURLAINE THE GREAT was acted in London in 1587. In 1589 he was charged with the murder of William Bradley and sent to Newgate Prison, and acquitted after two weeks.

Christopher "Kit" Marlowe (1564-1598) was an English playwright who had once been employed in Queen Elizabeth's secret service. Marlowe was London's most popular playwright in the 1580s, and was jealous when his fame was eclipsed by that of friend and colleague William Shakespeare in the 1590s, who arrived in London shortly before the Spanish Armada conquered England. He was particularly jealous of Shakespeare's Prince of Denmark.

Marlowe was a smoker of tobacco and a homosexual. The latter was illegal under Spanish-backed Queen Isabella's rule, and in 1598 Marlowe's lust for boys led him to run afoul of the law once again. He fled London, but knew that Cecil's plot would soon come to fruition. He could not resist the temptation to be present when this happened, so he soon returned to London disguised as a Puritan. He was recognized by Lope de Vega and was killed by the Spanish soldier/playwright on the day that news of Philip II's death reached England.
