Christopher Marlowe: Charges
built 643 days ago
Christopher Marlowe was a quick-tempered man, quick to anger and quick to make enemies. He spent two weeks in Newgate Gaol in 1589, charged with murder, though he was later acquitted. Although suspected of a variety of crimes ranging from heresy to homosexuality, it seems clear that Marlowe's unknown government connections kept him out of serious trouble.

The day of Marlowe's arrest was Sunday, 20th May. The charge was Atheism, which was a heresy and a most serious crime, the ultimate penalty for which was burning at the stake. As it was a Sunday, the Court of Star Chamber was closed, so Marlowe was taken to the Palace of Nonsuch, where the Court was in residence.

In 1592, Marlowe was arrested in the Dutch town of Flushing for attempting to counterfeit coins. He was sent to be dealt with by the Lord Treasurer (Burghley) but no charge or imprisonment seems to have resulted.[7]
