Christopher Columbus: Man
built 191 days ago
Since no portraits of the famed discoverer, Christopher Columbus, were made during his lifetime, an analysis of the images used to describe the physical attributes of the man and his place in history is an exercise in cultural relativism. Three time periods veers studied: soon after his death when the public simply needed to know what the explorer looked like, hundreds of years after his explorations when commercial interests used Columbus as a symbol for their own further expansion into unknown territories, and during the present day when a majority of opinion about Columbus and his exploits is severely critical.

A row over the origins of Christopher Columbus may soon be solved by DNA samples taken from possible descendants of his family. The man credited with discovering the Americas is claimed as a son by both Genoa in Italy and Catalonia in Spain.

Christopher was the oldest of five children. His brothers, Bartholomew and Diego, worked closely with him on many of his enterprises. Christopher and his brothers may have been tutored or sent to a monastery school to learn basic Latin and mathematics. Christopher's formal education ended at about age 14.

Christopher Columbus - Discoverer Everyone recognizes that many people were in America long before Christopher Columbus. The Asiatic peoples who became Native Americans were certainly the first, tens of thousands of years ago. Also Norse expeditions to North America, starting with Bjarni Herjolfsson in 986, are well established historically. Many other pre-Columbian discoveries are not well established: claims have been made for St. Brendan, Basque fishermen, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, and even Carthaginians. Some of these claims may be true; most are probably not.

For some time now there has been a lot of mischief afoot in which the reputation of Christopher Columbus has been unduly sullied. It is only a matter of time before the infamous, anti-Catholic, anti-Christian, pro-pagan, pro-Muslim ACLU, the SS of the intolerant liberal state, will succeed in having the holiday in remembrance of Columbus changed to something PC, false, demeaning and utterly unjust. Much of the polity is ignorant, thanks to the PC-"sanitized" government schools and is easily swayed when not outright flummoxed before the venom-tipped tongues of those who hate Jesus Christ and hide under the mantle of patriotism and "rights", surely the last refuge of those who betray truth itself.

The Library of Congress offers this examination of America from pre-Columbian times through colonization of the continent with a nice section on 'Christopher Columbus, the man and the myth'. The section on 'How to use the 1492 Exhibit' offers guidelines for making use of the site.
