The Christmas Island red crab is by far the most obvious of the 14 species of land crabs found on Christmas Island. It is estimated that 120 million of these bright red land crabs live in their preferred shady sites all over the island.

There were three endemic mammals living on Christmas Island at the time of human colonisation and two endemic rodents, which have since become extinct. Two species of rat were introduced to the island around 1887. Mice and feral cats ... occur on the island. |more|

The island is surrounded by a narrow tropical reef which plunges into a bottomless abyss. Close to the shore lies a coral reef, this extends to the edge of the spectacular drop off into the Java Trench. With Visibility often reaching 50m, divers can clearly see into the depths and admire the magnificent drop offs and the amazing forest o f fan corals.

Eighteen plant species are endemic to the island, including the rare fern Asplenium listeri. There are five endemic reptile species, five endemic bird species, and one endemic mammal. Seven vertebrate subspecies are endemic, and there are at least 92 endemic invertebrates.
