Christmas Island: Seas
built 657 days ago
Christmas Island is one of the world's truly spectacular tropical seabird breeding stations. It's not just the number and variety of seabirds, or their magnificent splendour that make the island so remarkable, but ... their sheer visibility. It is estimated that around 80,000 seabirds nest here annually.

In Britain, too, strategic imperatives were changing and the Christmas Island base was an early casualty of the withdrawal of British Forces from the Pacific theatre. In June the last inventories were made, obsolete and dangerous materials were dumped at sea, the offices were locked and at sunset on Monday 19th June, 1964 the White Ensign was lowered at the Royal Navy shore station, H.M.S. Resolution.

Returning to Christmas Island, they found the seas had calmed down and they were able to get a boat onto the beach where the shipwrecked crew had landed and built their little houses. Inside the huts they found stacks of boxes of provisions from the AEON'S hold, some of which had been brought ashore by the crew at the time of the shipwreck and others which Captain Robertson believed to had been more recently landed. A note was pinned to a makeshift table which read: "These stores have been left for the benefit of any other shipwrecked crew who might be unfortunate enough to land here." Quite clearly some unauthorised persons had been here to plunder the salvage that the apparently abandoned steamer had left in her hold. Dynamite had been used to blow a hole in her hull to gain easy access to the stores remaining.

Christmas Island offers some wonderful walks through the beautiful forests, as well as diving, fishing and surfing. The surf season is between November to March, while snorkeling is great between April to October. There are ... some great places for you to explore on the island although to reach some places it is necessary to hire a 4WD or join one of the islands tours, both of which you can do from Kiat.
Christmas Island rises to a central plateau of stands of rainforest. Its 80 kilometre coastline is an almost continuous sea cliff up to 20 metres high, with a few shallow bays of small sand and coral shingle beaches. The largest of these forms the island's only port, Flying Fish Cove.
