Christmas Carols: England
built 613 days ago
Lighter, more joyful Christmas carols were eventually written, but all Christmas music was banned between 1649 and 1660 in England. (Oliver Cromwell thought Christmas should be a solemn day.) When Protestants left for the New World, they took the Christmas carols with them. And in 1649, John de Brebeur wrote the first American Christmas carol called "Jesus is Born".
Christmas carols continued to be popular until 1647, when the Puritans controlling Parliament in England ended elaborate Christmas celebrations. Although the celebrations were banned in England and the influence was felt strongly in America, those in the countryside and other countries continued the festivities. A revival of Christmas carols occurred during the Victorian era in England and the Americas.
When, in 1647, Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans came to power in England, the celebration of Christmas and singing carols was stopped. However, the carols survived as people still sang them in secret. Carols remained mainly unsung until Victorian times, when two men called William Sandys and Davis Gilbert collected, lots of old Christmas music from villages in England.
