In the U.K., online Christmas shopping is already well underway, with cyber shopping traffic up 23 percent in the third week of November versus the shopping activity in the base month of October. Christmas shopping in France started more slowly, but is beginning to gather pace and grew by 18 percent over October's level in the third week of November. German activity was actually 10 percent lower than in October caused in part by the trade union strikes in the transport and service industries that are currently affecting the German economy as a whole.

According to YouGov, in the UK over one-third of Christmas shopping was done online. 53% of those shopping spent more online in 2005 than in 2004. Amazon.co.uk took nearly 25% of money spent by respondents on music and home entertainment goods. November and December 2005 saw online sales in the UK of almost £5 billion in 2005 compared with £3.5 billion in 2004.

In the late 1800's a candy maker in Indiana wanted to express the meaning of Christmas through a symbol made of candy. He came up with the idea of bending one of his white candy sticks into the shape of a Candy Cane. He incorporated several symbols of Christ's love and sacrifice through the Candy Cane. First, he used a plain white peppermint stick. The color white symbolizes the purity and sinless nature of Jesus. Next, he added three small stripes to symbolize the pain inflicted upon Jesus before His death on the cross.
