Christmas: Christmas Decor
built 658 days ago
In the U.S., Christmas decorations at public buildings once commonly included Nativity scenes. This practice has led to many lawsuits, as groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union believe it amounts to the government endorsing a religion, which is prohibited by the United States Constitution. In 1984, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Lynch vs. Donnelly that a Christmas display (which included a Nativity scene) owned and displayed by the city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island did not violate the First Amendment.[9]

It was in Germany, the cradle of Christmas decorations, where it was literally seen as the tree of Paradise – that from which Adam and Eve sampled the fruit. As such, the initial decorations were ripe, red apples. Eventually communion wafers were added. And as the tradition spread to other parts of Europe, candles fixed to the branches to show that the light that Christmas had brought to the world, were added. This is often attributed to Martin Luther, who reportedly attached these to his family’s tree, to demonstrate to the children how stars shone at night.

"When I went to get some Halloween decorations in mid-October, Christmas decorations were stacked right next to Halloween items. Besides the orange and black not mixing with the red, green, and gold, there is an almost perverse twist to the season like this."
