From All Movie Guide: Unpredictable American actress Christine Lahti majored in drama at the University of Michigan, then toured Europe with a group of pantomimists. She studied with Uta Hagen in New York, taking whatever stage work that came along (including her Obie award-winning performance in an Off-Broadway revival of Little Murders) before being steadily employed on TV. In 1978, Lahti was co-starred in The Harvey Korman Show as Korman's daughter. The following year, she made her first film, ...And Justice for All. A scene stealer par excellence, Lahti often found her film roles reduced in the cutting room, usually at the behest of nervous stars. Her performance as Hazel Zenutti in Swing Shift (1984) was severely pared down after previews, but that didn't prevent Lahti from being nominated for an Oscar.

Christine Lahti plays an eccentric aunt to two orphaned girls in the Pacific Northwest. The girls enjoy her presence until they realize her imagination is just a little more unique than they can deal with. Bill Forsythe, the director of the lovely Scots comedies Gregory's Girl and Local Hero, made his first American production with this wonderfully bright and flaky comedy dominated by the splendid performance of Christine Lahti as the aunt of two teenaged girls trying to cope with the loss of their parents. As Sylvie, Lahti portrays a free-spirited if not rootless woman whose eccentricities provokes each of the girls in very different ways. When forced to try to conform, she struggles, but one of the girls proves to have some of the same blithe quirks. Beautifully photographed, wonderfully acted.

CHRISTINE LAHTI: So many people missed the end of the movie because of the delay. In the kitchen scene, after Nathan says he made a huge mistake and he hurt everyone, Rose doesn't take him back. In fact, she tells him he can have the house because she's moving on. The next day, her former boss Simon calls to offer Rose her old job back. She turns him down, saying that she has better offers and she can "no longer work for such a sexist, ageist, scum-sucking pig." A few days later, Rose and her friend Madeleine are leaving Rose's house with luggage--they're taking a trip to Paris. A miserable Mindy shows up.
