Although she was born in New York, Christina Aguilera grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. Her father is of Ecuadoran descent and her mother is of European descent. Aguilera's parents divorced before she was 10, and Christina moved in with her grandmother. Christina Aguilera had a precocious talent for singing. She competed in the television show Star Search in 1990 at age 9. She did not win, but became somewhat of a local celebrity.

Through amateur talent competitions, she gained attention for the power and maturity of her singing voice and was recruited for Disney’s TV show The Mickey Mouse Club in 1993. After moving from place to place as a young child, Aguilera and her family finally settled in Pittsburgh and she started performing in talent shows at the age of six. Aguilera went on to perform on the T.V. show Star Search but didn't win. However, Aguilera ended up on the Mickey Mouse Club and from there her career took off. In 1998, Aguilera recorded the song "Reflection" for Disney's Mulan and got a record deal with RCA who released her self-titled debut album in 1999.
