Christian Scientist: Christian Scientists
built 178 days ago
Two Christian Scientists, H. R. Haldeman and John Ehrlichman, of the Nixon era helped sponsor a Congressional bill which extended the copyright of "Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures" by 75 years. The bill became law but has since been declared unconstitutional. 19
A Christian Scientist is a member of The Church of Christ, Scientist (Also referred to as CCS). The church is ... recognized by the term The Christian Science Church, which was its original title and is not associated with the Church of Scientology. The organization was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1879. Currently, the CCS is run by a five-person Board of Directors headquartered at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. The CCS has approximately 2,300 churches in 68 countries.
Christian Science healing is a method of spiritual healing based on the beliefs of the Christian Science, or Church of Christ, Scientist, church. The church's healing practices are based on the divine healing work of Jesus. Adherents hold that the material world is a false reality and that health is a condition of mind, God, and truth. Thus, Christian scientists believe that ill health can be cured by spiritual education, understanding of the truth, and prayer.

On February 9, 2001, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on Wisconsin's first Christian Scientist governor, Gov. Scott McCallum. Christian Science is "a remarkably democratic religion -- one with local autonomy, no clergy and no formal doctrines...Few Wisconsin residents know much about the religion other than a vague sense that it emphasizes faith rather than medicine in healing...That might raise questions about the fact that one of McCallum's first policy initiatives was a proposal to make prescription drugs more widely available for senior citizens...That might raise questions about the fact that one of McCallum's first policy initiatives was a proposal to make prescription drugs more widely available for senior citizens. But people familiar with Christian Science say it would not require him to act any particular way on that issue...Christian Science does not recommend that people alternate conventional medicine with its biblical, prayer-based approach to healing," but it does not condemn members who do. "Within the faith, there are widely varying degrees of reliance on prayer...Christian Scientists believe in Jesus and in all the Gospel accounts of him. Services include music, public and private prayer, and readings by elected lay readers of the faith's fundamental books -- the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. Her book "discusses a scientific application of the laws of God that were behind Jesus' healings."

Christian Scientists are not Creationists or biblical literalists - they regard the Bible as often having symbolic rather than literal meaning. Consequently they do not believe that the Theory of Evolution is necessarily false from a mortal, material perspective--they do not object to its being taught in schools, nor do they demand that alternative accounts be taught. They regard it, even if "true," as referring to the illusory, mortal realm rather than the spiritual. For similar reasons, Christian Science does not object to contemporary geology, cosmology, or biology. Christian Science periodicals occasionally cite developments in cosmology and physics as indicating how contemporary science is coming to an understanding of the illusory nature of time and materiality (e.g. Gerber, 2002, p. 3).
CS-Bg The Christian Scientists consider their philosophy to be consistent with the original teachings of Jesus. They consider truth a matter of higher understanding and learning. But the reality is that Christian Science has only produced unbiblical and false doctrines. Eternal destruction is the only thing that will result from its false teaching. The fires of hell will be a bitter reality for those who have been taught that they don’t exist. TOP OF PAGE
