Chris Columbus (... known as Joe Morris) was a drummer and bandleader, and father of drummer Sonny Payne. He led a band from the 1930s, including a period at the Savoy Ballroom. He was a regular drummer with Louis Jordan from 1946-52, and is seen with the saxophonist in the films Reet, Petite and Gone (1947) and Look Out, Sister (1948).

Chris Columbus was previously attached to direct the big screen adaptation of Marvel Comic's "Sub-Mariner," but Variety writes that the job has gone to "Terminator 3" helmer Jonathan Mostow. Besides directing the film, he will be rewriting the script as well.
After finishing film school, Columbus started in the industry as a screenwriter with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Productions, working on Gremlins (1984), The Goonies (1985) and Young Sherlock Holmes (1985). He created and wrote the first episode of the animated series Galaxy High (1986-87).
Between blockbusters, Columbus discovered a flair for gentle romantic comedy, scripting and directing "Only the Lonely" (1991), an uncharacteristic film for grown-ups from producer John Hughes. John Candy and Ally Sheedy were the romantic leads and the lovely Maureen O'Hara returned to the screen after an 18-year absence to play Candy's emotionally dependent mother who finds romance with Anthony Quinn. Returning to his roots as an animation maven, Columbus contributed to the script of the Japanese feature "Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland" (1990; released in the USA in 1992), inspired by Windsor McCay's celebrated comic strip from the early 1900s.

The controversy over who discovered America doesn't touch this historical American jazz figure, whose full name was Joseph Morris Christopher Columbus. He sometimes appears in credits as Joe Morris, but shouldn't be mistaken with the free jazz guitar player of the same name. This Joe Morris, and we'll stick to Chris Columbus from here on in and never mind the wrath of Queen Isabella, is an early 20th century jazz figure, although he kept playing well into the '70s, the decade as well as his age at the time. He ... founded something of a musical dynasty, fathering jazz musician Sonny Payne. Columbus was active as a bandleader for two decades beginning in the early '30s, including a residency at the Savoy Ballroom when it was the hippest music spot in town.
