One of the more successful filmmakers to "graduate" from the Spielberg School of Genre Moviemaking, Chris Columbus emerged as a specialist in combining a sensitivity for feelings of young people with a rousing adventure yarn. The only child of a coal miner father, Columbus sold his first script while still in college and went on to pen three highly imaginative and commercially popular films ("Gremlins" 1984; "The Goonies" 1985; "Young Sherlock Holmes" 1985) for producer Steven Spielberg before making a competent directorial debut with the engaging teen comedy "Adventures in Babysitting" (1987).

Columbus was still in college when he sold three scripts to producer Spielberg: Gremlins (1984), The Goonies (1985) and Young Sherlock Holmes (1985), all of which became films with devoted youth followings. His first film as director, 1987’s Adventures in Babysitting, was likewise a comedic hit targeting youth and teens in those teen-flick-loving eighties – since its theater run, the film has enjoyed a long shelf life on video and television. Columbus returned to directing from his own screenplays with Heartbreak Hotel (1988), about a teen who kidnaps Elvis. But it was the gigantic success Home Alone (1990) that cemented Columbus’ reputation as a wunderkind in kid-targeted directing. The film catapulted child actor Macauley Culkin into stardom and generated a sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992).
