When Keithy's friends put out a $10,000 contract on him, Chopper just laughs it off. But when his best friend (Simon Lyndon) stabs him repeatedly in an attempt to collect, Chopper knows he's in trouble. Arranging to have his own ears sliced off, he wins release by claiming that the injuries are the result of an attempt on his life.

Chopper's appeal stems from market demand for a counter to let-wing ideology. As a man who has spent a lifetime dealing with ice-picks and death threats, Chopper doesn't find effeminate gays flapping their wrists about racism, homophobia, or un-sophistication to be as intimidating as do other members of society. Consequently, Chopper has always been one to say whatever he wants, how he wants, and where he wants. Ironically, his criminal history had made him bullet proof. Calling a confessed murderer a racist or homophobe is like chastising an athiest prostitute for not saying grace before every meal. For a population that has cowed in fear as one insult has been thrown upon them after another, Chopper represents some kind of modern day Ned Kelly fighting back.

This movie tells the true story of the Australian criminal and author Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read. He killed 19 drug dealers, but was only charged for one of the murders. However, he wasn't convicted. He did... spend most of his adult life in jail for other crimes. While in jail he wrote a book about his life and it became a best seller. This movie tells his story while he was in prision in 1978 and his life in 1986.
