Chobits is a Japanese manga and anime series created by CLAMP. Chobits is a seinen series, specifically of the magical girlfriend variety. The story centers on the life of Hideki Motosuwa, a repeat student attempting to qualify for university by studying at the Seki prep school in Tokyo. Besides a girlfriend, the other thing he dreams of having is a Persocom. - an android used as a personal computer. The series explores the nature of Persocoms, human interactions with them, and the nature of love.

The one thing that keeps Chobits marginally interesting is the comedy. The beginning of the series does have some very funny moments, even if much of it is very blatantly taken from other series; the infamous panties-buying episode is ripped straight from a chapter of Akira Toriyama's popular manga Dr. Slump. Yet, even the humor takes a downfall as jokes are repeated over and over again. The last half of the anime drops the comedy almost entirely in favor of a dramatic ending.

The original Chobits manga was written by Clamp, a famous group of four Japanese mangaka (manga artists) and was serialized in Kodansha's Young Magazine in Japan from February 2001 until the manga's completion in November 2002. Clamp often reuses (or parallels) various characters among their manga. Chobits is one of their first attempts at the seinen genre.

In a break for CLAMP, the main lead in Chobits is a guy, though he shares the spotlight with Chi. Chobits even has a pint-sized mascot, in this case, Sumomo - Hideki's friend Shinbo's ultra hyper mobile Persocom. Under this show's shonen exterior lies a theme of humans' dependence on technology. Using human shaped computers makes the execution of this theme a lot more personal and concrete. While the anime isn't incredibly deep, it does provide enough of a dilemma to bring the show past the level of being merely a vehicle for Chi fanservice (which there is plenty of, incidentally).

Though it sometimes is written off as just another robot-girl anime, Chobits should not be overlooked by fans of romance and comedy. The first half alone makes this anime worth watching, and once viewers are hooked even the slower second half doesn’t drag it down too much. Bottom line, Chobits is worth watching.

Summary: Chobits is about the life of a 19 year old boy, Hideki Motosuwa. He is an honest and imaginative teenager trying to get into university. He was raised on a farm, and he has very little experience with women. He dreams of having a girlfriend, and a persocom (a computer designed to look and act like a human). In the city, he finds out that persocoms are quite common. Though, that doesn't mean Hideki can get one that easy, and he has no money, and persocoms are not cheap.
