Chlorophyll is a molecule found in all eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms, but its helper pigments are not necessary for photosynthesis. There are several variants of chlorophyll used by different algaes and photosynthetic bacteria, all classified primarily by colour.

Chlorophyll conditions are normally high in nutrients, generally phosphorus and nitrogen. These nutrients reason the algae to grow or bloom. High levels of nitrogen and phosphorus can be indicators of pollution from synthetic sources, such as septic system leakage, badly functioning wastewater treatment plants, or fertilizer runoff. Chlorophyll measurement can be utilized as an indirect indicator of nutrient levels.

Chlorophyll poses no known direct threat to human health. There are some rare cases where algae can become high enough in abundance to cause concern. However, toxic algae are generally not a problem.
