Chloe followed Clark to the Fortress and almost died from the extreme cold, but Clark interrupted his training to take her to a hospital. There, Clark finally had to address that Chloe knew his secret. Chloe revealed she saw him catch a car "like it was a beach ball." Clark admitted that he is from another planet, but Chloe was not appalled or frightened-- she reacted with wonder and admiration. Chloe questioned Clark's seemingly flippant reaction to suddenly being human, telling him she thought his destiny was greater than being a farmer in Kansas. She helped him rescue Lana and the Kents from escaped patients from Belle Reve.

Chloe serves as Lana Lang's maid of honor when she marries Lex. Lana uses Chloe by locking her in a wine cellar so that she could witness Clark's powers and confirm what she has already suspected for some time.

Chloe was seemingly driven to suicide and was treated by a psychiatrist, Dr. Sydell. She insisted that she did not try to kill herself, but no one believed her except Clark. When she began to hallucinate a vision of murdered girl, Gretchen Winters, Lana asked Lex to transfer her to Belle Reve for better care. However, Clark rescued her and took her to Lois' apartment, where the murdered girl possessed her to extract revenge on her murderer. Back to normal, Chloe had to face her anxiety over her mother's mental illness and with Clark's encouragement, went to visit her for the first time.

Chloe was born in Metropolis in 1987 and moved to Smallville in eighth grade. Early in the series, when Clark showed her his loft, she kissed him on the lips just to "get that out of the way"; it was Clark's first kiss. Chloe is Clark's platonic friend, though she concealed a deep-seated crush on Clark that sometimes caused her to resent Lana Lang and Clark's infatuation with her. At the end of the first season, Clark admitted to having some feelings for Chloe, but he was unable to let go of hopes that he might one day be with Lana.

While exploring the Kawatche Caves, Pete and Chloe got infected with a parasite that caused them to do impulsive things. Pete slipped red kryptonite to Clark so he would join in, and Clark revealed his powers to Chloe. On Chloe's suggestion, an affected Chloe and Clark made out at The Talon, prompting Lana to become disgusted with both of them. However, when Clark snapped out of it, Chloe got upset and declared that she was tired of being second fiddle to Lana, and she and Pete left without Clark to go find more thrills. Clark had to save the two from driving their car off a cliff. When they were cured of the parasite, they did not remember anything that happened.
