Chivalry
built 267 days ago
Chivalry's virtues were piety, honor, valor, courtesy, chastity, and loyalty. The first orders of chivalry were very similar to the monastic orders of the era. Both sought the sanctification of their members through combat against "infidels" and protection of religious pilgrims, and both had commitments that involved the taking of vows and submitting to a regulation of activities. Three of the most well-known orders, the Templars, Hospitallars and Teutonic knights, tried to add components of piety, faith, humility and chastity
An"Order" of Chivalry is an organization of Knights, usually named after a Christian Patron Saint (such as the Order of St. John) or named after a place sacred to Christians (the Order of the Holy Sepulchre). Originally, there were no Orders of Chivalry; Knights were independent, and Knighthood was passed on from one Knight to a worthy man who had proved himself in battle, a practice which gave rise to the secular (non-religious) "Knight Bachelor" (which type of Knighthood still exists, as described below). However, as the King and Church began to recognize the value of Chivalry and Knighthood as marks of honor, the need developed to control the distribution and granting of the honor; therefore, Orders began to form, with the King or the high Church official granting Charters and sometimes acting as the head of the Order (the "Grand Master") who controlled and asserted authority over the honor. The individual Knights of an Order cannot themselves grant Knighthood, but rather, the Order itself (deriving its authority from its Charter and usually acting through its Grand Master) grants the rank and status of Knight to those who enter the Order.

Chivalry helped lessen the harshness of the warfare of the time, for emphasis was laid on the courteous treatment of prisoners. Even so, kings, and nobles were held for ransom when captured, and the code of chivalry applied only between members of the noble, ruling class. They did not have to apply this code to the common people under them. The chief occupation of the nobles was warfare, so they seem to have thought nothing of the violence and bloodshed that accompanied it. A warrior was supposed to fight as hard as he could, and it was perfectly proper to burn the homes of the enemy and seize his posseions. The whole idea of chivalry in warfare implied nothing more than the respect of one warrior for another. In fact, warfare between nobles became so fierce that at one time in the Middle Ages the church attempted to limit such private battles.

This is a knight fighting for sexual favors. Chivalry was further influenced by Christianity during the Crusades. The Crusades did gain the support of knights, but almost all the knights that enlisted were drunk and horny... they continued their harsh practices while invading the Holy Land. However, there was a small section of knights who formed military-based religious orders. These knights vowed to work solely for the intent of the Christian God and to reclaim the Holy Land. They believed that knighthood could be a life of holyness. These knights were often picked on and beaten up by the manly knights and had their lunch money stolen regularly.
Chivalry is defined as courteous behavior typically directed towards a female by a gentleman. While on Dr. Phil, Dick was described as chivalrous by one of the other guest stars…What in the hell was she thinking? Read Dick’s full post here.
